Renowned board-certified dermatologist Ava Shamban M.D. is a true skin visionary, clinician, author, anti-aging expert, and prejuvenation proponent.

Licensed to practice in California, New York, Illinois, and Hawaii, Dr Shamban is the owner and director of two branded practices. The first is AVA MD, her full-service dermatology clinic with locations in Malibu and Beverly Hills. Her newest concept SKINFIVE is a tech-based provider of essential face and body treatments located in Pacific Palisades and Century City.

Dr Shamban is well known as the Extreme Makeover dermatologist, resident expert on the Emmy-winning daytime talk show The Doctors, a regular guest on Steve Harvey and Extra, and author of the best-­selling skincare guide Heal Your Skin: The Breakthrough Plan for Renewal

Additionally, she hosted a digital series for Condé Nast Entertainment, “Dr Ava Says”, as an Allure Insider. She is slated to premiere a new podcast series “Beauty In Your Own Backyard”, where she will travel to different cities and discuss all things beauty.



Dr Shamban graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University before earning her medical degree from Case Western Reserve Medical School. She completed an internal medicine internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, then went on to receive a Dermatology Foundation Fellowship for the study of extracellular matrix proteins. Under the direction of Dr. Jouni Uitto, she performed bench research on the expression of the elastin gene in various genodermatoses. Dr Shamban completed her dermatology residency at Harbor-­‐UCLA Medical Center in 1989.

Industry Accomplishments

Dr Shamban has been an industry pioneer in developing a multimodality treatment approach to acne, acne scars, pigment problems, rosacea, photoaging, intrinsic aging, and epigenetic aging. Her arsenal of treatments includes laser, light, ultrasound, and radiofrequency technology combinations along with injectables, infused topicals, and at-­home treatment programs. 

Dr Shamban lectures extensively on topics ranging from medical and cosmetic issues to laser dermatology. As a physician educator, she is an instructor for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Fillers and Injectables, an instructor/presenter at the American Academy of Dermatology, a lecturer for Continuing Medical Education courses, and a presenter for prominent pharmaceutical companies. 

In 2006, Dr Shamban established the ATS Clinical Research Center to conduct clinical research on dermatological disorders, rejuvenation technologies, fillers, and neurotoxins. She has been a principal investigator on many clinical trials that led to the FDA approval of Juvederm, Restylane Lyft, Dysport, Bellafill, Restylane Silk, Epiduo, Isolaz, Accent, Xeomin, and Photoderm


Highly regarded by the medical dermatology community, Dr Shamban has published medical journals and book chapters for peer review, including Cosmetic Dermatology, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Facial Plastic Surgery, Journal of Cutaneous Laser Therapy, and Dermatologic Clinics on topics ranging from inherited gender matoses to laser technology to innovative cosmetic procedures. She also serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.

The inspiration for her book Heal Your Skin stems from her extensive work with patients experiencing serious health issues such as cancer, menopause, and trauma. In the book, as in her practice, Dr Shamban provides readers with the opportunity to look their best even when they may feel their worst. In the face of some of life’s most challenging situations, Dr. Shamban provides helpful tips, nutrition and exercise advice, and DIY recipes for readers to create specialized skincare treatments at home.


In her own time, Dr Ava Shamban is an enthusiastic traveler. She has visited every continent on Earth! She also enjoys spending time with her three sons engaging in activities like hiking, skiing, cycling, yoga, and fine dining.
