What is the Difference Between Intrinsic and Extrinsic Aging?

What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic aging? Intrinsic aging is the process by which all of our organs age. Intrinsic aging is determined by each person’s genetic makeup and is affected by degenerating free radicals. Extrinsic aging is caused by external factors and can often be preventable. Things like sun damage, pollution, an unhealthy diet, and too much sugar all contribute to extrinsic aging. While we have the most control over our extrinsic aging, to a certain extent we also have some control over intrinsic aging by maintaining a healthy wellness lifestyle.

TRANSCRIPT: “When we look at aging, we like to understand what contributes to the older appearance of our skin. We tend to categorize it into two buckets, one is intrinsic aging, and that’s the process by which all of our organs age. So it is genetically coded, it tends to run in the family, so you can look at your relatives and kind of get an idea of where you’re going. You can also look at an area that has not been sun exposed and get an idea of what things look like, and so areas such as your bottom, the inside of your arm – places that typically do not have any sun exposure, so that would be intrinsic aging, which is means aging that happens intrinsically.

Now, extrinsic aging, that is categorized by the type of aging that’s accelerated essentially by exposure to the environment. So that would be ultra violet damage, pollution damage, that would be what you put in your mouth if you’re eating foods that have a lot of free radicals like deep fried food, all the stuff we love, too much sugar, all of these things have an impact on your skin, and that would be in the category of extrinsic aging, That’s where we really have a lot of control. We also to a certain extent have some control over intrinsic aging by maintaining a healthy wellness lifestyle.”
