Every product that is included in The Box by Dr Ava has been reviewed with a lens based on the culmination of almost 30 years of industry knowledge and work. At the beginning of her training, Dr Ava started in basic science research. She was looking at the expression of the collagen and the elastin gene. Collagen and elastin are the two main proteins that are in the skin – collagen makes up 70% of the skin and elastin only 2% -but they are both incredibly important to skin quality. As a clinical researcher, Dr Ava has had her hands on all sorts of the products used today such as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Restylane, and Juvederm. She has evaluated the safety and efficacy of these products for use on the face, or in the body. The Box by Dr Ava includes the products that she felt would truly affect your skin. As a board-certified dermatologist with a strong research background, Dr Ava is in the position to choose products that are efficacious and safe.
TRANSCRIPT: “At the beginning of my training, I started in basic science research. What I was looking at was the expression of the collagen and the elastin gene. Collagen and elastin are the two main proteins that are in the skin, collagen makes up 70% of the skin and elastin only 2%, but they’re both incredibly important to the quality of the skin, to the plumpness, to the snapback quality of the skin, and so I was looking at the expression of the genes that make the collagen and elastin in our skin. So I began really with the basics, I would draw blood from patients, we’d isolate DNA, we looked at patients who had different inherited diseases of their skin.
So I started as a basic science researcher, then over the years, I have become a clinical researcher, which means that all of the cosmetic products that we use today, from Botox to Dysport, to Xeomin to some newer products that are coming, as well as Restylane and Juvederm and something called RAJ, all of these products I have had my hands on and a clinical research project is when patients come in (they volunteer, obviously, and they’re enrolled in one of these clinical trials, which are monitored by the FDA, ultimately, and the function of these trials is to approve these products for use, and so we evaluate the safety and efficacy of these products in the face or in the body. I’m what is called the clinical investigator for these trials, so that means that as a research site and as a research physician, we enroll and recruit these patients for inclusion in these trials.”
